The car of the future will be powered with electricity. But so far there is no battery that could store enough energy for long trips. Even mobile phones and laptops usually do much too quickly collapsed. Where is the solution of the problem?
Current is the Polymath among energy sources. Countless devices from televisions to the spacecraft can be operated with them. Unfortunately, electricity is a very volatile substance. As the super Acer Battery is the favorite for researchers and engineers, a further development of lithium-ion technology. Although this allows comparatively more durable power supply for mobile phones and camcorders, the energy density is not nearly enough for long trips with the electric car - by far the highest price of these batteries quite apart. Perhaps could also be a completely different technology to solve the problem of electricity storage.
Lithium-ion batteries are relatively light, have no memory effect and currently have the highest energy density of all production-ready electric power storage. They are therefore almost everywhere as a first choice when it comes to developing high energy batteries to power electric cars. In Germany the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the development of the project "Lithium-ion Dell latitude d830 battery " with 60 million euros. In addition, a consortium wants to BASF, VW, Evonik Industries, Bosch, and Li-Tec Battery Kamenz in Saxony (a joint venture between Evonik and Daimler) push the promising battery technology with 360 million euros. In about three years there will be a production-ready battery concept. Alongside scientists from 13 Fraunhofer institutes in a joint project of the lithium-based energy storage.
A typical lithium-ion battery consists of differently charged electrodes. In between is an electrically conductive fluid, the electrolyte. In standard cells, by contrast, metal-oxygen compounds such as cobalt oxide and graphite used as electrode materials. Loading and unloading of a lithium Ibm thinkpad t61 battery , positively charged lithium ions migrate between the two electrodes and fro. They are stored depending on the state of charge, either in metal or between the levels of the atomic graphite lattice.
What sounds simple, however, causes problems in detail: a large number of different battery concepts arises only through the combination of different materials for electrodes and electrolytes. Lithium-ion battery should ideally be able to store a lot of power at low weight, be inexpensive and can withstand thousands of charge cycles without damage. Of course, even under extreme conditions, they should not go up in flames as soon as possible and be rechargeable. All this can be technically difficult, however, to reconcile.
