Resolving 'the Document Is Corrupt And Cannot Be Opened' Error A Excel Startup
Microsoft Excel includes a feature of startup folder, called XLStart folder, that can be used to load the files at startup and as a reference for templates. This folder can contain files, like, templates, add-ins, and workbooks (*.xls). The workbook you place in this folder appears in hidden state at the time of startup. But if this startup workbook gets corrupted, you experience issues in starting the application and need excel repair solutions.
Let's take an example to illustrate such an event. A Microsoft Excel user creates a workbook and stores large amount of important data in the file. It then moves the file to XLStart folder. After using it for a considerable time, the user one day observes that he cannot open the workbook. When he tries to open Microsoft Excel, the application fails to start with the below error:
"The document is corrupt and cannot be opened. To try and repair it, use the Open and Repair command in the Open dialog (File menu) and select Extract Data when prompted."
As a result of this error, Excel user cannot access the data further.
Cause:
The most probable cause for the above error to occur is corruption in Excel workbook. Microsoft Excel cannot start because the file has been placed in XLStart folder.
Solution:
To troubleshoot the given problem, you need to find out and repair the problem file using the following steps:
- Locate your XLStart folder. In Windows XP, the default path is C:Documents and SettingsUsernameApplication DataMicrosoftExcelXLSTART or C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10Xlstart
- Move all the file it contains to a different folder
- Try to open these files, one at a time to find the corrupt file
- Move other files back to XLStart
- Open the corrupt Excel file using Excel 'Open and Repair' function to repair it
