How Garage Doors with Openers Work
Garage door openers are undeniably instruments of convenience. With just one click, your heavy garage doors will open, without you having to touch the door.
The electric overhead garage door opener was invented by C.G. Johnson in 1926 in Hartford City, Indiana. The opener comes in the form of a garage door remote or clicker. It controls how far the door opens and closes, as well as the force the garage door exerts. In most cases, the garage door opener also acts as a lock.
The typical electric garage door opener consists of a power unit that contains the electric motor. The power unit attaches to a track. A trolley connected to an arm that attaches to the top of the garage door slides back and forth on the track, thus opening and closing the garage door. The trolley is guided along the track by a chain, belt, or screw that turns when the motor is operated. A quick-release mechanism is attached to the trolley to allow the garage door to be disconnected from the opener for manual operation during a power failure or in case of emergency. Limit switches on the power unit control the distance the garage door opens and closes once the motor receives a signal from the remote control or wall push button to operate the door.
The most complicated part of a garage door is the opener and its hardware – the drive mechanism, the garage door springs, the tracks, the brackets – all the parts that combine to make it work smoothly over and over and over again. There are all kinds of garage door springs and parts. One of the most important parts is the actual garage door spring. These powerful springs are under very high tension – that's what gives them the strength to lift the weight of the door. If you look at a garage door, you'll see either a set of springs, one on each side, or a long spring running across the top above the door. The springs on your garage door can either be a pair of extension springs or torsion springs. Without them, your garage door would come crashing down when it's closed. Other garage door parts that work with the springs are the rollers and hinges.
Garage door rollers enable the doors to smoothly roll up to the ceiling of the garage. Of course, your garage door has to be made of steel, aluminum, or vinyl in order for it to "roll up." Garage door rollers only need to be aligned with the hinges and put in track with the panel in order to work.

Garage door remotes are limited to about 315 Mhz which means that only the set codes, at a set distance, can open and unlock the garage doors.
