Pigment Vs. Dye Based Ink? Pros And Cons Of Ink
There are two types of printer inks that users often use in producing documents or photographs, namely, dye-based or Pigment-Based Inks. Printer inks, whether pigment-based or dye-based, are composed of three different parts: the colorant, the solvent or the printer ink and chemicals that enable the printer inks and paper to mix.
Of the two, dye-based printer ink is the one that has been around longer. Its main difference with the newer pigment-based printer ink is that dye-based inks stick to papers stronger. Another advantage in using dye-based inks is its use of a water-solution that enables the colors on the prints it produces to be more dissolved and embedded in the papers.
Printers that utilize dye-based printer inks tend to produce prints with more vibrant and mixed colors, carefully placed and embedded on the print-outs. Dye-based prints use heat and pressure to evaporate the excess water from the printer ink leaving the finished product with colors set in the papers.
Dye-based printer ink may stick more to the paper than pigment-based ink does but messy prints can also be brought about by the dye's water-solubility. Since dye completely dissolves in water, dye-based prints can be as easily blotched as it can be printed. This is mainly why pigment-based inks have been developed for the past few years.
Pigment-based Inks
While it may be more expensive than dye-based inks, pigment-based prints will most likely last longer than dye-based ink produce. This is mainly so because of the ink's main characteristic which features colorants encapsulated in particle-based solutions.
Pigment-based inks provide print-outs with particles of colors spread throughout the paper. This preservation of color is the main advantage that pigment-based inks have against their more traditional dye-based counterparts.
Pigment-based inks are also great for printing pictures as the colors are more compact than the pictures produced using dye-based inks. Also, using pigment-based printer inks produces prints that are more fade resistance making its storage easier to do.
Dye Vs. Pigment
Choosing between the two printer inks depends largely on how the user will use the prints. There are other considerations to look at before choosing what type of printer ink is going to be used. These include:
- Some printers cater only to dye-based while others only to pigment-based.
- There is also the issue of drying as pigment-based inks tend to dry faster than dye-based ones.
- More colors can be provided by dye-based inks since its colors are freer to mix with each other when printing.
- There's also the issue of "metamerism" with pigment-based printer inks. Metamerism happens when pigment-based colors appear differently under a different lighting condition. For example, a print-out may appear black under dim lights but dark green on brighter lights.
- When it comes to pricing, dye-based inks are more affordable as it has been around longer and is more main stream than pigment-based inks.
Today, newer developments are constantly being made to further improved document and photo-printing processes. Newer kinds of printer inks are expected to join dye-based and pigment-based inks to provide more choices to users and more quality printing in the process.
